Unity:
Simplicity
Unity is a simple game engine by simple I mean its user friendly it has a wide variety as to what it will allow you to make a high quality game can be made by a beginner as much as an expert can.
3-D and 2-D
Unity is a good engine for 3-D games as well as a 2-D engine this ability to be able to make games for both of these versions of a game or you can do both 2-D with 3-D assets
As a game engine this is very effective because this gives you the freedom to be able to create any kind of game.
Rigid body
Rigid bodies are a built in function that turns an object into a solid object and applies physics to the object that affects the objects positioning in the game such as gravity and mass that will affect the rate in which it falls at. This rigid body also allows the engine to detect the collisions with objects for example let’s say I had a sphere and a wall if I put a rigid body on the ball and a collision mesh I can make the sphere bounce back after it hits the wall
Coding
One thing that make unity stand out so much is the fact that its coding languages that are built in to the game engine these are c++/c#, JavaScript, boo this is a wide variety to what kind of script that can be used soon
As these coding languages are quite different so more people will be able to do the essential requirements to make the game that they want to be able to make
Multi-platform
unity is different from most game engines when it comes to changing platform the engine has a built in code that changes it from 1 console to another or even mobile depending if the platform can handle the game
Unity supports the following platforms IOS, Android, windows, blackberry, windows phone, browser, apple, Linux, ps3, Xbox 360 and WiiU hopefully in the near future there will be even more platforms such as ps4, xbox1.
Limitations
One of the main limitations is that it relies on its community to be able to get script for the game for example if you don't know how to programme the game you would need to rely on the unity community to be able to create the game
another on a similar note is the debug system if multiple errors occur it will say one thing will be the error but when that is fixed another bug will occur this will happen again and again until the code has gained extra lines.
Unreal game engine:
Pre-scripted code
A large advantage to U.D.K is that it has multiple built in codes this means that the chances of needing to do coding is less likely however if you do need to do coding there is code to be able to do the functions in the
engine already. so you will be able to click and add a code to an object for example lets say if I want to make an ai shoot every 30 seconds I can select the ai and programme it to do so every 30 seconds.
built-in assets meshes and scenes
in a similar to the pre-scripted code the game engine also has built in objects and assets this is good because the game doesn't need to be place holders all the time because there is objects accessible at any time
limitations
Unreal game engine is an engine that can only create games in 3D this is a limitation that make unreal a little less popular however its reputation as a 3D game engine is well known .
It also does't have access to many coding languages in place of the standard coding program it allows you to use the built in code
It requires a large amount of people to work on the one game for example a standard game can take up to 2 years to make a game that works correctly
Conclusion
In the future I will be more likely to use unity the reason behind this is unity has a more options when it comes to what can be used to be able to create the game however most of the assets have to be made before hand unless you make place holders. UDK has some benefits as well such as everything required is already in the game however because it will need many people to create a game the chances of me using it in the future is low.
